About

Hey there! My name is Mike. I’m an assistant professor at the Moss Landing Marine Labs (MLML) at San José State University where I study ocean processes with a focus on polar regions.

Since I was a kid, I have been drawn to the ocean and to science, and I have been very fortunate to grow a career combining these two interests. These days, I consider myself an oceanographer and a glaciologist interested in tackling problems pertaining to how our planet and the people on it will be affected by our changing climate. I spend a considerable amount of time behind the computer screen crunching data but I try to balance this effort with a healthy amount of time outside - both for science and for recreation.

At MLML, I am the principal investigator of the Computational Oceanography lab (CoOL). You can check out the CoOL group on our tab above. I teach classes in Marine Science Master’s program at MLML and I also have a role in SJSU’s Department of Computer Science where I teach undegraduate courses in programing and machine learning.
